Out of the four known pineapple varieties thriving in the Philippines, ππ€π₯ππ§ ππ’π§Μπ is the only variety preferred by Aklanon artisans specifically for weaving, owing to its highest tensile strength and productivity, as it produces two kinds of fibersβliniwan (fine fiber) and bastos (coarser fiber)βfrom a single leaf. This preference dates back to our ancestors, who recognized its superior qualities for weaving. As defined in the Philippine National Standard (PNS) Pineapple Fiber (PNS/BAFS 318:2021)βan illustrative guidepublished in 2021 by the Department of Agriculture (DA-BAFS), PhilFIDA, and Raquelβs PiΓ±a Clothβthis variety serves as the cornerstone of piΓ±a weaving traditions.

First introduced to the Philippines in the late 16th century during the Galleon Trade, the pineapple was brought by the Spaniards as a food supply. However, our ancestors saw beyond its fruit and discovered its potential as a source of fine fiber for weaving. Technically identified as the Red Spanish pineapple, it adapted to the local environment and thrived, earning its name "Bisaya" or Aklan PiΓ±a in the Visayas region.

The cultivation of Aklan PiΓ±a requires immense dedication. Farmers carefully tend to piΓ±a farms for approximately 18 months, ensuring the plants grow longer leaves and stronger fibers that are ideal for weaving. This distinct farming practice is a labor of love, passed down through generations, and plays a vital role in sustaining the Aklan PiΓ±a industry. The unwavering commitment of farmers not only supports other artisans but also upholds the legacy of this unique craft, ensuring its survival and growth for years to come.

Today, this centuries-old tradition continues to thrive in our community. Leaves from mature piΓ±a plants are carefully harvested by hand and delivered to scrapers, who skillfully extract the fibersβa labor-intensive process requiring patience and precision. We honor and deeply appreciate our farmers, whose dedication and craftsmanship sustain the Aklan PiΓ±a value chain. Without their hard work, we would not have the fibers essential to crafting the intricate and world-renowned piΓ±a textiles.

This project is proudly supported by Senator Loren Legarda and the Philippine Fiber Industry and Development Authority (PhilFIDA) in partnership with Raquelβs, whose shared vision ensures the continued growth and preservation of the Aklan PiΓ±a industry.
